St Mary's Cathedral and St Michael's Church at Hildesheim

The ensemble of St Mary’s Cathedral and St Michael’s Church in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, are prominent examples of Ottonian and Romanesque architecture and medieval ecclesiastical art. The site was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1985.

St Michael’s Church was built in the early 11th century under Bishop Bernward, who was a major patron of the arts; St Mary’s Cathedral has origins in the early medieval bishopric with significant 11th- and 12th-century modifications. Both churches served as episcopal centres and repositories of art, and after severe wartime destruction in the 20th century they were restored following conservation principles.

The churches are located in the historic centre of Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, within walking distance of the town centre and are major features of the city’s medieval urban fabric.
