St Martin's Cathedral (Spišská Kapitula)

St Martin’s Cathedral on Spišská Kapitula is a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral and the focal church of a fortified medieval ecclesiastical town in eastern Slovakia, forming part of the UNESCO-listed Spiš ensemble.

The cathedral is noted for its 13th-century origins and later Gothic modifications, surviving medieval frescoes and its role as the seat of the chapter. The surrounding group includes a bishop’s palace, chapter house and defensive walls that together form a compact hilltop religious settlement.

Construction of the cathedral and the chapter complex began in the medieval period, with major building phases in the 12th to 15th centuries and continued use as an ecclesiastical center across the medieval and early modern periods.

The complex sits on a limestone hill adjacent to Spiš Castle and the town of Spišské Podhradie in the Prešov Region of eastern Slovakia, visible from the surrounding valley and roads.
