St. Martin's Cathedral, Bratislava

St. Martin’s Cathedral in Bratislava is a Gothic church in the city’s historic centre that served as the coronation church for Hungarian monarchs in the early modern period. Construction of the present Gothic fabric dates mainly to the 14th and 15th centuries.

The building is notable for its tall spire and Gothic interior, with a long nave and vaulted aisles; the tower reaches approximately 85 metres and is one of the tallest church towers in the city. The cathedral contains features associated with its role in coronation ceremonies and remains an active parish church.

The core Gothic structure was erected in the late medieval period and the church gained prominence when Bratislava became a coronation city for the Kingdom of Hungary from the 16th century until the early 19th century. It has undergone restorations and conservation work over subsequent centuries.

The cathedral sits in Bratislava’s Old Town, close to Bratislava Castle and the compact historic centre, within walking distance of the main city square.
