St. Ivan Island
Island Small Black Sea island with medieval monastery ruins
A short boat ride from Sozopol delivers St. Ivan Island, where a medieval monastery, a lighthouse and shallow coves attract day-trippers, photographers and archaeologists.
St. Ivan Island is a small island off the coast of Sozopol in Burgas Province, Bulgaria, known for its archaeological remains and medieval monastic site. It is uninhabited today and visited primarily for its historical ruins.
The island contains the remains of a medieval monastery complex and associated burial sites; visitors come to see exposed foundations and grave finds rather than built museums or buildings. There are shoreline ruins and visible stone structures from ecclesiastical use.
Archaeological excavations have identified structures and human burials from the medieval period; the site has produced artifacts that document monastic life and funerary practice. Over time the monastery fell into ruin and the island ceased to be permanently inhabited.
The island sits close to the town of Sozopol on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, within Burgas Province. Boat access is the normal approach and the island is managed as an archaeological and historical site.
- Access: Day-trip boat services operate seasonally from Sozopol; landing is limited and the island is largely uninhabited.
