St. Donatian's Cathedral
Church Historic cathedral in Bruges, largely demolished
Formerly Bruges’ cathedral, St Donatian’s was demolished at the end of the 18th century; the site by the Markt and Belfry still draws visitors interested in medieval Bruges and municipal history.
St Donatian’s Cathedral (Sint-Donatianus) was the medieval cathedral of Bruges in present-day Belgium, but the building was largely demolished in 1799 during the French period. It was formerly the seat of the bishop in Bruges and an important ecclesiastical building in the city.
Because the cathedral no longer stands, the former site is incorporated into Bruges’ historic centre and is near other surviving landmarks such as the Burg and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. The location is encountered within the compact medieval street pattern of central Bruges.
Historically the cathedral dated to the medieval period and served as Bruges’ episcopal church until ecclesiastical institutions were suppressed during the late 18th century; demolition took place under the revolutionary administration.
The former site lies in the heart of Bruges’ old town, close to Burg Square and the Markt, within the city’s historic core.
- Demolished site: The medieval cathedral was demolished during the French Revolutionary period in 1799, so nothing of the original cathedral remains as a functioning church building.
