Srebarna Nature Reserve is a freshwater lake and wetland complex in northeastern Bulgaria, recognised for its importance to wetland biodiversity and waterbird populations. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1983 for its ecological value.
The site has long been recognised locally for its rich bird life and was progressively protected under national conservation measures before its international recognition. Its value stems from long-term ecological processes supporting wetland flora and fauna rather than human construction.
Srebarna sits near the southern bank of the Danube plain in northeastern Bulgaria, within Silistra Province; it lies inland from the Danube and is accessed from the regional town of Silistra.

How to Get to Srebarna Nature Reserve #
Srebarna Nature Reserve lies on the Bulgarian bank of the Danube near the town of Silistra. From Silistra drive roughly 15-20 km to the village of Srebarna and the reserve (about 20-30 minutes by car); local buses or taxis connect Silistra with the village, and the reserve is a short walk from the village center.

- Visit at dawn in spring (March-May) or during autumn migration (August-September) for the best birdwatching-these periods concentrate breeding and migratory species, including large waterbirds.
- Use the official visitor centre and observation hides on the reserve's western side to see birds without disturbing nesting areas-these hides give much better viewing than standing at the lake edge.
- Combine an early morning visit with a weekday trip to avoid local weekend anglers and day‑trippers; the reserve is small and can feel crowded on public holidays and weekends.
