Sporades Subregion
The Sporades are a cluster of pine-green islands scattered off the coast of Thessaly - famous for emerald forests, dazzling beaches and the marine park that shelters the Mediterranean monk seal.
Sporades at a Glance#
The Sporades are lush, forested Aegean islands of turquoise coves and ‘Mamma Mia’ scenery, far greener than the bare Cyclades.
Why go / don’t miss: the beaches of Skiathos, the clifftop church and ‘Mamma Mia’ backdrops of Skopelos, the wild marine park around Alonnisos, and remote, traditional Skyros.
Areas: Skiathos (beaches and nightlife), Skopelos (green and pretty), Alonnisos (nature) - and the separate, farther Skyros.
Getting around: fly into Skiathos; ferries link the northern three; Skyros is reached separately from Evia.
When to go: Jun-Sep for the sea; July-August busiest.
Where to stay: Skiathos or Skopelos as a base.
Dining: fresh fish, plums and local cheese; Skopelos is known for its cheese pies.
Local tips: the Alonnisos Marine Park is Europe’s largest, protecting the rare Mediterranean monk seal.
