Sponza Palace

Sponza Palace is a public palace in the walled Old Town of Dubrovnik, Croatia, constructed in the early 16th century and notable for its blend of Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements. It is one of the few major public buildings in Dubrovnik to survive the catastrophic earthquake of 1667.

The palace’s key visual features include an arcaded ground floor and an open courtyard framed by ornate stonework and columns; the courtyard and façade are the main attractions for visitors. The building currently houses the Dubrovnik State Archives and is used for occasional exhibitions and cultural events.

Built in the early 1500s as a customs house and public palace, the structure has served multiple civic roles over time, including storage of records and financial functions for the maritime republic of Ragusa. Its preservation through earthquakes and later restorations has left the original public-facing architecture largely intact.

The palace stands inside Dubrovnik’s city walls on the eastern side of the Old Town, a short walk from the main street Stradun and other principal landmarks such as Rector’s Palace and the town gates.
