Spianada
Plaza Main esplanade square in Corfu with Venetian influence
Corfu’s Spianada (Esplanade) is the island’s broad Venetian-era square, fronted by the Liston colonnade. Tourists sit at cafés, watch promenades and use it as the starting point for Old Town walks.
Spianada is the main public esplanade and central square of Corfu Town in the Ionian Islands, notable for its broad open lawns and the elegant arcades known as the Liston.
The square combines a large open grassy area historically used for military drills and public ceremonies with the Liston arcade, which contains cafes and restaurants. A small cricket pitch occupies part of the esplanade and reflects the British cultural influence on the island.
The square evolved under Venetian rule and was reshaped during the 19th century; its architecture and layout show layers of Venetian, French and British influence. Today it functions as the civic heart of Corfu Town, linking the Old Fortress, municipal buildings and the seaside promenade.
Spianada sits in central Corfu Town, adjacent to the Old Fortress and a short walk from the island’s waterfront and main pedestrian streets.
- Size and character: The Spianada is widely recognised as the largest public square in Greece and combines open green space with enclosed arcades and cafés.
What to See #
- Liston arcade: A long arcade of early 19th-century buildings modelled on Parisian cafés and arcades, installed during the French and British periods and now housing cafes and restaurants along the square's north side.
- Central esplanade and cricket pitch: An open grassy esplanade used historically for parades and public gatherings that includes a small, traditional cricket ground and flanked by the Old Fortress and municipal buildings.
