Iberia is Spain’s full-service flag carrier and a conventional network airline operating a mix of domestic, European and long-haul services from its primary hub at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas (MAD). It positions itself as a global network carrier with a strong focus on transatlantic traffic and is a member of the oneworld alliance and part of the International Airlines Group (IAG).

From a traveler’s perspective, Iberia offers the amenities you’d expect from a European full-service carrier on long-haul routes and standard short-haul services across Spain and Europe, with a connectivity advantage through its Madrid hub and oneworld partnerships.

Iberia Plus - Iberia's Frequent Flyer Program

Iberia’s loyalty program is called Iberia Plus, and the program uses Avios as its points currency; members earn Avios on eligible Iberia flights and on many partner flights and services. Avios can be redeemed for award travel, seat upgrades and other rewards across Iberia and oneworld partners, making the program useful if you regularly fly Iberia or other Avios-using carriers. The program has elite tiers that confer benefits like bonus Avios earning and lounge access for qualifying members, and Iberia Plus’s close integration with other Avios programs makes it a practical option to credit Iberia flights to if you plan to redeem Avios for future travel.

Where Iberia Flies

Iberia operates from its main hub at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas (MAD) and runs a network that mixes domestic Spain and European short/medium-haul services with extensive long-haul routes to the Americas. The airline is particularly focused on transatlantic connections between Madrid and destinations across Latin America and North America, while its European services feed those long-haul flights. As a member of oneworld, Iberia’s codeshares and alliance partnerships extend its reach beyond its own timetable through connections with other major network carriers.

Aircraft and Cabin Classes

Iberia’s network is flown mainly with Airbus aircraft: A320-family narrowbodies are used on short and medium-haul European and domestic routes, while widebody Airbus types (A330 and A350) handle most long-haul services. Regional routes and thinner domestic sectors are served by a mix of regional jets and turboprops operated either by Iberia or partner/feeder airlines. Cabin offerings are straightforward: long-haul aircraft provide a business class and economy cabin (many long-haul business cabins include lie-flat seats), while short-haul aircraft are typically single-cabin economy or offer a small business/front-cabin product on some services.

Aircraft types operated: ATR 72, Bombardier CRJ200, Bombardier CRJ900, Canadair Regional Jet, Airbus A320 family, Airbus A330, Airbus A340, Airbus A350, Sud Aviation Caravelle, Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation, Fokker F28 Fellowship

Tips for Flying Iberia Airlines

  • Check the fare conditions carefully before booking because low-priced short-haul fares often exclude checked baggage and seat selection.
  • Credit flights to Iberia Plus (Avios) or another Avios-using program if you plan to redeem on Iberia or oneworld partners.
  • Allow extra connection time at Madrid-Barajas (MAD) when connecting between short-haul and long-haul flights at the main hub.
  • Buy lounge access only if you don’t have oneworld status or a business-class ticket, since lounge access rules follow ticket class and alliance status.
  • Use the Iberia mobile app or online check-in (typically available around a day before departure) to choose seats and manage boarding passes.
