Spaç Prison is a former political prison and labour camp in northern Albania associated with the communist era. It operated as a secured penal complex used to detain political prisoners during the communist period.
The compound includes multiple long cellblocks, watchtowers and built infrastructure related to forced labour and mining operations; it was in use from the late 1960s through the early 1990s. After closure it became a ruinous memorial site reflecting Albania’s 20th-century political history.
The prison sits inland in a mountainous area of northern Albania, near the small settlements in the valley known locally as Spaç; the surrounding landscape is steep and forested.
- Nature of the site: The site was a political prison and labour camp under Albania's communist regime and is notable as one of the most prominent inland prison camps used for dissidents.
- Access and setting: The complex is located in a remote valley in northern Albania and is accessed by rural roads; the terrain around the site is mountainous.
