Sopoćani monastery

Sopoćani monastery is a medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery founded in the 13th century in the Raška region and renowned for its outstanding fresco painting program.

Established as a royal endowment in the 13th century, the monastery served as a religious and cultural centre for medieval Serbia; its frescoes date from the monastery’s early period and reflect high artistic achievement. The complex survived later political changes and is preserved as a heritage site.

Situated in central Serbia’s Raška region, the monastery stands in a rural valley area and is commonly reached from the nearby regional town of Novi Pazar.
