Soluntum
Archaeological Site Ancient Sicilian city ruins overlooking Palermo coastline
Soluntum preserves an ancient settlement on Sicily’s northern coast with paved streets, house ruins and sea views; visitors explore the archaeology and link the site to wider excursions from Palermo.
Soluntum (also spelled Solunto) is an archaeological site on a coastal hill near modern Santa Flavia, Sicilia, containing the remains of an ancient Phoenician-Greek town later Romanized and occupied through late antiquity. The site preserves street layouts, domestic architecture and funerary areas.
Initially settled in the pre-classical period by Phoenician or Phoenician-influenced communities, the settlement became Hellenized and subsequently incorporated into the Roman world; it was inhabited from archaic periods through the Roman and late-antique eras. Excavations began in the 19th century and have continued intermittently, exposing domestic architecture, tombs and public spaces.
The ruins stand on a low promontory above the sea near the town of Santa Flavia, approximately 15-25 kilometres east of Palermo along the northern Sicilian coast, occupying a position with direct views over the Gulf of Palermo.
- Sea views: The site sits on a coastal hill with clear views over the Gulf of Palermo, making the shoreline and sea visible from several terraces.
- Long occupation sequence: Occupation spans Phoenician and Greek periods and continues into Roman and late-antique phases, so finds range from archaic pottery to Roman-period building remains.
What to See #
- Upper town (acropolis): Located on a limestone hill overlooking the Gulf of Palermo, the acropolis and upper town contain streets and remains of public buildings positioned on the summit and highest terraces.
- Residential quarters: A network of residential quarters with remains of stone houses, mosaic floors and domestic installations arranged on terraced slopes of the site.
- Necropolis: Clustered chamber tombs and burial areas outside the main habitation zones, reflecting funerary use from the classical and later periods.
- Agora and public areas: Open spaces interpreted as civic areas with remains of street layouts, small shrines and foundations of public structures from Greek and Roman phases.
