Šolta
Island Adriatic island with olive groves and beaches
A Dalmatian island near Split, Šolta offers olive groves, small harbours, and pebble bays; sailors, day‑trippers and those seeking quieter Croatian coast villages frequent its coves and tavernas.
Šolta is a Croatian island in the central Dalmatian archipelago, administratively part of Split-Dalmatia County. It is characterised by small fishing villages, olive groves and a low-key tourism profile compared with nearby larger islands.
Visitors are typically attracted to the island’s coastal harbours, local seafood and olive-oil based gastronomy, and the quieter pace compared with Split or Hvar. There are short coastal walks and boat-accessible coves rather than large resort developments.
Šolta has been inhabited since antiquity and its economy has long combined fishing, agriculture and seafaring; modern tourism complements rather than replaces these traditional activities.
The island lies off the Dalmatian coast near the city of Split and is reached by ferry services that call at the main port of Rogač, providing regular connections with the mainland.
- Local produce: Known locally for olive oil production and small-scale agriculture, the island retains many traditional rural practices and foods.
What to See #
- Grohote: Grohote is the island's administrative centre and oldest inland village, with traditional stone houses and local services.
- Maslinica: Maslinica is a coastal village with a sheltered harbour that serves local fishing boats and visiting yachts.
- Stomorska: Stomorska is one of the island's oldest seaside settlements, with a waterfront and seasonal tourism facilities.
How to Get to Šolta #
Šolta (Split-Dalmatia County) is reached by ferry from Split. Jadrolinija and seasonal fast catamarans operate crossings to Šolta’s main port, Rogač; crossings are typically about an hour. From Rogač the island’s local roads connect the villages; if you bring a car, drive off the ferry and follow island road signs.
Tips for Visiting Šolta #
- Take the car ferry to Rogač (the island's main ferry port) rather than smaller boat drops; Rogač is the most reliable connection to Split and puts you close to inland villages and rental options.
- Head to Šolta's western coves (Maslinica and Stomorska) in late afternoon when day-boat traffic has left; you'll find quieter anchorages and better light for photos of the fishing villages.
- Explore the island's interior lanes and the village of Grohote - many visitors stick to the coast and miss the small olive groves, family-run konobas and abandoned hamlets inland.
Best Time to Visit Šolta #
Visit in late spring or early autumn for pleasant weather, calmer seas and fewer tourists; July-August are busiest.
