Mountain Highest peak on the Isle of Man, popular hiking
Highest peak on the Isle of Man, accessible by the Snaefell Mountain Railway; hikers and day-trippers climb or ride to the summit for expansive sea and coastal views.
Snaefell is the highest mountain on the Isle of Man, reaching an elevation of 621 metres. It is a prominent upland feature in the island’s northern interior and a focal point for walking and scenic viewing.
Trails and a seasonal mountain railway provide access to the summit area, where visitors can see broad coastal and sea views; on very clear days multiple parts of the surrounding British Isles are visible. The summit area is open moorland with marked paths for hikers.
The mountain formed through the island’s geological processes and has long been a local landmark, used for recreation and as a reference point for navigation. The railway and footpaths developed in the 19th and 20th centuries to support tourism and local access.
Snaefell sits in the parish of Lezayre in the northern part of the Isle of Man, a short drive from the island’s main settlements and linked by the island road network.
