Smederevo Fortress

Smederevo Fortress is a medieval Serbian fortification located on the right bank of the Danube River in the town of Smederevo. It was constructed in the early 15th century as the seat and defensive stronghold of the Serbian Despotate.

The complex comprises substantial outer walls, towers and internal space that originally housed administrative and residential buildings; its riverside position gave it strategic control over navigation and trade. The fortress has been the subject of archaeological study and preservation efforts.

Historic records indicate the fortress was built under Despot Đurađ Branković around 1428-1430 to serve as a capital and defensive hub during a turbulent period in the region. Over subsequent centuries it saw sieges, repairs and changing use under Ottoman and later administrations.

Smederevo Fortress occupies a low riverine plain at the confluence of the Danube and Jezava rivers in central Serbia; it lies adjacent to the modern town of Smederevo and is reachable by road from regional centres.
