Slovak Karst National Park
National Park Protected karst region with caves and limestone gorges
Limestone plateaus laced with caves, sinkholes and underground rivers define Slovak Karst National Park; tourists explore show caves, spelunking routes, marked trails and the UNESCO-listed cave system shared with Hungary.
Slovak Karst National Park protects a large karst plateau in eastern Slovakia and is known for extensive limestone and dolomite karstification and subterranean systems. The area is significant for its complex cave networks, sinkholes and surface karst forms and is part of the cross-border karst region shared with Hungary.
The park contains numerous caves and several show caves that are open to the public on guided routes, along with forested plateaus and gorges that attract hikers and cavers. Trails and marked viewpoints give access to surface karst features and panoramic views of the plateau.
The region has been the focus of geological and speleological study for more than a century; the cave systems and karst landscapes have been progressively protected under national park status and cross-border conservation initiatives. The area is included among internationally recognised karst regions for its geomorphology and cave ecosystems.
The Slovak Karst lies in southeastern Slovakia, in the Košice Region near the border with Hungary, north of the Hungarian Aggtelek karst area and within reach of regional towns used as gateways for visitors.
- Caves and karst features: The park contains an extensive karst landscape with hundreds of caves, sinkholes and gorges; several of its caves are developed as show caves with guided tours.
What to See #
- Domica Cave: A major show cave open to guided tours with stalactite and stalagmite formations and walkways for visitors.
- Gombasek Cave: A smaller show cave notable for its contrasting speleothems and accessible guided route, frequently included on regional cave circuits.
How to Get to Slovak Karst National Park #
From Košice (about 60-90 km), drive or take regional trains to Rožňava and then local buses to park entrances such as Dobšinská Ľadová Cave (a UNESCO site) or Krásnohorská Cave. Many showcaves have their own small parking areas; guided tours operate seasonally.
Tips for Visiting Slovak Karst National Park #
- Descend into at least one of the park's showcaves (e.g., Domica system) with an experienced guide - the karst features are best understood from inside, where stalactites and stream channels reveal subterranean geology.
- Wear a warm layer for cave visits; underground temperatures are stable and cooler than surface air in summer.
- If visiting the Slovak Karst from Košice, take the train to Rožňava and then a local bus or taxi - public transit is limited in the park itself.
Best Time to Visit Slovak Karst National Park #
Best visited late spring through early autumn for hiking and access to showcaves; cave tours run seasonally and should be booked in advance.
