Skyros is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea and the southernmost member of the Northern Sporades island group. The island is known for its traditional villages, local crafts and a distinctive small horse breed native to the island.

Landscape on Skyros combines rocky hills, pine-covered slopes and sandy bays; the principal settlement, Chora, sits above a small harbour and is the island’s cultural and administrative centre. Visitors use the island’s regular ferry and small-airport connections to reach the mainland and neighbouring islands.

Historically Skyros has retained strong local traditions and architecture, and it continues to be a destination for travellers seeking a quieter, rural Greek island experience. The island’s economy is based on small-scale agriculture, tourism and local crafts.

Skyros lies in the central Aegean Sea and is part of Greece’s administrative region for the Sporades.

  • Local culture: Home to the endemic Skyrian horse breed and noted for traditional crafts and local festivals that preserve island culture.
  • Main town and access: The main settlement is Chora (Skyros town), which contains the principal harbour, shops and connections to ferry and air services.

How to Get to Skyros #

Skyros is reached either by ferry or by air. Regular car/passenger ferries sail to Skyros from ports on the mainland and Evia (notably Agios Konstantinos and Kymi); check the current timetables for departures and the island’s main port. Skyros also has a small airport (Sku: SKU) with scheduled flights from Athens during much of the year.

On arrival the port (and the airport) are a short taxi ride or a few-kilometre drive to Skyros Town (Chora); local buses/taxis connect the port, airport and main settlements.

Tips for Visiting Skyros #

  • Plan to arrive on the first morning ferry to Linaria to explore Chora before tour-day visitors arrive; the hillside town is far quieter early and the narrow streets show traditional Skyrian architecture at their best.
  • Use Izothos/Chora (central Skyros town) as your base and rent a scooter or car for the day-public buses are infrequent, so a vehicle lets you reach remote beaches and the island's northern interior where the native Skyros ponies are found.
  • Balance popular stops (Chora, the port) with a run to lesser-visited bays on the south coast in the afternoon when daytrippers have left; many visitors never get beyond the town and miss the island's quieter coastal stretches.
