Škrlatica is a major peak in the Julian Alps of Slovenia and ranks as the country’s second-highest mountain at approximately 2,740 metres. It is notable for its steep faces and alpine climbing routes.
The mountain attracts mountaineers for routes on its north face and for ridge traverses; approaches require alpine experience and appropriate equipment. From established mountain huts climbers typically make summit bids in good weather.
The peak forms part of the high alpine landscape of the Julian Alps and is within the wider area of Triglav National Park. Its steep relief and glacially carved terrain are characteristic of the range.
Škrlatica lies in the upper reaches of the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, in the Municipality of Kranjska Gora and accessible from alpine trailheads and mountain lodges.

How to Get to Škrlatica #
Most ascents start from the Vrata Valley near Mojstrana or from the Trenta valley; the nearest town with services is Kranjska Gora (approx. 30-40 km by road). Public buses connect Kranjska Gora and Mojstrana. From Mojstrana follow trails toward the Krma or Pokljuka approaches and then onward to the Dolič bivouac (several hours’ hike). Mountain roads do not reach the summit; expect a long hike and exposed scrambling.
Tips for Visiting Škrlatica #
- Start early from the Vrata Valley to avoid afternoon storms and crowds on the Škrlatica ridge.
- Hire a licensed mountain guide or join a mountaineering group if unfamiliar with exposed scrambling and route-finding on the north face.
- Bring crampons and an ice axe outside July-September; snow can remain on the gullies well into summer.
- The marked route from Dolič hut is steep and loose in places-use trekking poles on the ascent to save knees on the descent.
