Skopelos
Island Green Sporades island known for pine-covered hills
A pine‑covered island in the Northern Sporades, Skopelos draws visitors for sheltered beaches, sailing, and its stone-built Chora with narrow alleys and tavernas serving fresh seafood.
Skopelos is a Greek island in the Northern Sporades known for pine-covered hills, traditional villages and sheltered beaches. It retains a largely rural character and is popular for family tourism and small-scale cultural visits.
Town visitors explore the hillside Chora with its narrow lanes, small Byzantine churches and a Venetian castle ruin above the harbour. Coastal highlights include sheltered bays such as Stafylos and Kastani, the latter overlooked by the small cliff-top chapel Agios Ioannis Kastri that is well known from popular films and photographs.
Skopelos has a long habitation history under classical, Byzantine and Venetian influence, with surviving architecture and ruins that reflect its maritime and rural past. The island’s traditional economy mixed fishing, olive growing and small-scale agriculture; tourism expanded in the 20th century while many villages retain historic forms.
Skopelos lies in the Aegean Sea as part of the Northern Sporades, north of the mainland coast near Volos and east of the island of Skiathos. Ferries and private boats provide regular connections to neighbouring islands and the mainland ports.
- Landscape: The island is part of the Northern Sporades and is noted for dense pine forests, rocky coves and a largely low-rise, traditional built environment.
- Access: Regular ferry connections link Skopelos with Skiathos, Volos and the mainland, making sea transport the main access route for visitors.
What to See #
- Skopelos Town (Chora): The island's principal settlement and harbour with a compact whitewashed town, narrow streets and a Venetian-era castle ruin overlooking the harbour.
- Kastani / Agios Ioannis Kastri: A pine-fringed bay with sand and pebbles that has a small rock-top chapel known as Agios Ioannis (popularly linked to a widely seen film wedding location on the island).
- Glossa (Loutraki area): A scenic village on the island's northwest ridge offering panoramic sea views and traditional stone houses; a common base for exploring inland roads and beaches.
- Stafylos Beach: One of the island's better-known beaches, with nearby archaeological finds and easy access from Skopelos Town by road.
How to Get to Skopelos #
Skopelos is reached by ferry or high-speed boat from mainland ports and nearby islands. Regular car ferries and passenger services sail to Skopelos from Agios Konstantinos and Volos on the mainland, and there are frequent boat connections from Skiathos (hydrofoil/catamaran) - crossing times vary by service. On arrival at Skopelos Town (the main harbour) the village and accommodation are generally a short walk from the quay (usually under 10-15 minutes).
Tips for Visiting Skopelos #
- If you're based in Skopelos Town, explore the harbor and old town before 10:00 or after 17:00 to avoid the peak arrival times of day‑trip ferries and cruise excursions.
- Use the main Skopelos Town port as your starting point for island buses and rental cars; inter‑island ferries and the limited local bus schedules mean planning arrivals/departures in advance is useful.
- Many visitors head straight to the beaches-make time for inland villages such as Glossa and for the small cliff church of Agios Ioannis (the Mamma Mia chapel) early in the morning when it's far less crowded.
Best Time to Visit Skopelos #
Visit Skopelos in late spring or early autumn for pleasant weather and far fewer crowds than peak summer.
