Skiathos
Island Greek island known for beaches and pine-covered hills
A Sporades island with pine forests and sandy coves, Skiathos draws beachgoers to Koukounaries, sailors along its coastline, and evening crowds to tavernas and a compact port town.
Skiathos is a small Greek island in the Northern Sporades, known for a compact harbour town, numerous beaches and a pine-lined interior. It is a popular summer destination for beach tourism and day-boat excursions to nearby coves.
The island’s highlights include the historic Skiathos Town with its harbour and narrow lanes, long sandy beaches such as Koukounaries backed by a pine forest, and pebble beaches like Lalaria that are accessible by boat. Many visitors combine time in town with organised boat trips to sample several beaches and snorkelling spots in a single day.
The island has been settled since antiquity and developed its modern tourist infrastructure in the 20th century while retaining small-scale village character in places. Cultural points include the Papadiamantis House Museum, dedicated to a prominent 19th-century Greek writer.
Skiathos sits in the Aegean Sea as part of the Northern Sporades archipelago, off the east coast of mainland Greece. The island’s main settlement and ferry port is Skiathos Town, which provides links to the mainland and neighbouring islands.
- Beaches and boat trips: The island has many beaches - locals commonly cite around sixty distinct beach coves and bays - so boat trips are the easiest way to sample multiple shorelines in one day.
- Visiting tips: Koukounaries is busiest in high summer; for quieter visits aim for morning or late afternoon, or take boat excursions to more remote beaches like Lalaria.
What to See #
- Skiathos Town: Skiathos Town (Chora) with its narrow streets, Venetian castle ruins on the peninsula and the island's main ferry harbour.
- Koukounaries Beach: Koukounaries, a long sandy beach backed by a protected pine forest, noted as one of the island's principal swimming and sunbathing areas.
- Lalaria Beach: Lalaria, a white-pebble beach with a distinctive rock arch accessible only by boat and popular for day trips and snorkelling.
- Papadiamantis House Museum: Papadiamantis House Museum in Skiathos Town, the preserved home of the 19th-century Greek writer Alexandros Papadiamantis.
How to Get to Skiathos #
Skiathos island is served by Skiathos International Airport (JSI) with regular seasonal flights from Athens (short domestic flights operated by carriers such as Aegean/Sky Express) and by ferries from ports on the mainland (notably Volos and Agios Konstantinos) and neighboring Sporades islands in summer.
On arrival at Skiathos port you can take local buses that connect the harbour with Skiathos Town (Chora) in about 10-20 minutes, or taxis; the airport is a short drive from Skiathos Town (roughly 3-5 km).
Tips for Visiting Skiathos #
- Arrive in Skiathos Town early in the day to catch bus connections to the island's beaches before the mid‑day influx of day‑trippers; the local bus network runs frequent services from the town terminal to major beaches.
- Take a short boat from Skiathos Old Port to Kastro or the northern coves in late afternoon for quieter views - many day‑trippers stick to the southern beaches and miss the medieval Kastro ruins and northern bays.
- Buy bus tickets from kiosks in town rather than on the bus in high season and check timetables - buses fill quickly on popular routes, so boarding the first departures helps avoid long waits.
Best Time to Visit Skiathos #
For good weather with fewer crowds, go in late spring (May-June) or early autumn (September-October); July-August is the busiest period.
