Skanderbeg Square
Plaza Central Tirana square featuring Skanderbeg's statue
Tirana’s main plaza centered on Skanderbeg’s equestrian statue, flanked by the National History Museum and the Ottoman-era Et’hem Bey Mosque; visitors come for museums, public events and nearby cafes.
Skanderbeg Square is the central public plaza of Tirana and the main civic space of Albania’s capital. It is named for the national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg and functions as the city’s primary ceremonial and meeting place.
The plaza is an open paved space framed by major civic buildings including the National History Museum, the historic Et’hem Bey Mosque, and the Palace of Culture. A prominent equestrian statue of Skanderbeg sits near the centre and serves as a focal point for photographs and events.
The square has been Tirana’s principal public space through the 20th and 21st centuries and has undergone several redesigns and reconstructions to reflect changing urban plans. Its current, largely pedestrianised form was established following major renovation work in the 2010s.
Located in central Tirana within Tirana County, the square sits at the heart of the city and is within easy walking distance of the main boulevards, government buildings, and transport hubs. It functions as the principal meeting point for visitors exploring the city centre.
- Skanderbeg statue: The square's central feature is an equestrian statue of the 15th-century national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, which stands on the main axis of the plaza.
- Recent renovation: Major pedestrianisation and paving works were completed in the 2010s, changing vehicle access and creating larger open public spaces for events and gatherings.
What to See #
- National History Museum: Sits on the north side of the square and is Albania's principal history museum, visible from the plaza and often used as a landmark for arrivals.
- Et'hem Bey Mosque: Historic Ottoman-era mosque located adjacent to the square, known for its painted interior and frequent inclusion on walking routes of the city centre.
- Palace of Culture: Large cultural complex on the square's south side that houses concert halls and the city theatre functions close to the main plaza.

Tips for Visiting Skanderbeg Square #
- Visit early morning or around dusk: the square is busiest through the middle of the day, while dawn and early evening provide better light for photos of the Skanderbeg statue and the illuminated National History Museum façade.
- Approach the square on foot from the Boulevard Dëshmorët e Kombit or from the pedestrianised streets nearby to avoid vehicle traffic; this also makes it easy to include short visits to the Et'hem Bey Mosque and the National History Museum, both immediately adjacent.
- Look beyond the central statue-most people miss the restored fountains and the pedestrian promenades that circle the square; walk the perimeter to find quieter viewpoints and café terraces with views of the square.
Best Time to Visit Skanderbeg Square #
