Skadar Lake National Park protects the Montenegrin sector of Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans, and its surrounding wetlands and limestone shorelines. The park conserves extensive reed beds, marshes and islands that are important for waterbirds and freshwater habitats.

Visitors most commonly take boat trips to view the lake’s reed-fringed bays and watch for waterbirds, with shore paths and lakeside villages providing easy access. The park is notable for its birdlife and wetland ecology rather than developed visitor facilities; guided boat tours from lakeside villages are the usual way to explore the system.

The lakeshore has been inhabited for centuries; monasteries, small fishing settlements and traditional livelihoods such as fishing and reed-cutting are part of the area’s human history. Many monastic sites and historic villages lie on islands and headlands within the lake basin.

Skadar Lake sits on the border between Montenegro and Albania in the Zeta region, with the Montenegrin national park protecting the northern and central Montenegrin shoreline; the park is accessible from nearby lakeside settlements and the regional road network.

  • Important wetland reserve: Covers the Montenegrin shoreline and wetlands of the lake, protecting reed beds, flooded forests and many bird species that use the area for breeding and migration.

What to See #

  • Lake Skadar: The main body of water forming the park, a large karst lake shared with Albania that fluctuates seasonally and supports extensive reed beds and marshes.
  • Virpazar: A lakeside village and common visitor gateway on the Montenegrin shore from which many boat trips into the park depart and local tours are organised.
