Mountains Mountain range dividing central Iberian Peninsula
The Sistema Central is a major mountain system that stretches across the central Iberian Peninsula, spanning parts of central Spain and extending into Portugal. It comprises multiple subranges, including the Sierra de Gredos, Sierra de Guadarrama and the Portuguese Serra da Estrela, and has peaks reaching above 2,500 metres.
The range forms an important natural barrier and watershed that has long influenced settlement, transport routes and river systems across central Iberia. It contains alpine and subalpine environments at higher elevations and is used for hiking, skiing and other mountain recreation in appropriate seasons.
Geologically and geographically the Sistema Central runs roughly east-west through the peninsula and includes the highest point of the system at Pico Almanzor in Sierra de Gredos.
