Forested hills above Sintra, Portugal, surrounding Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle and Quinta da Regaleira; visitors hike trails, tour palaces and take coastal viewpoints.
The Sintra Mountains (Serra de Sintra) are a coastal mountain range in the Lisbon District of Portugal, forming a compact, forested ridge west of Lisbon and serving as the setting for several major palaces and historic estates.
The ridge rises to about 528 metres at its highest point and offers numerous viewpoints with views across Sintra and toward the Atlantic coast. Key visitor sites on and around the mountains include Romantic 19th-century palaces, medieval castles and ornate estates set within dense woodland and landscaped gardens.
Many routes and trails traverse the slopes, linking town-level cultural sites and hilltop monuments over distances of a few kilometres, making it possible to visit multiple landmarks in a single day.
The area has been occupied since medieval times and contains fortifications from the Moorish period alongside 19th-century Romantic constructions commissioned by Portuguese royalty and nobility. Over time the mountains became a preferred retreat for Lisbon elites, resulting in the mix of castles, palaces and landscaped estates seen today.
The range lies immediately west of the town of Sintra, roughly 25 km northwest of central Lisbon, and forms part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park that stretches to the nearby Atlantic coastline.
- Elevation: The range's highest point reaches about 528 metres above sea level, giving many viewpoints with coastal vistas on clear days.
- Protection status: Much of the range is protected within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, which combines rugged woodland, cliffs and cultural landmarks.
What to See #
- Pena Palace: A 19th-century Romantic palace constructed on a hilltop with panoramic views over Sintra and the Atlantic; notable for its vivid color schemes and eclectic mix of architectural styles.
- Moorish Castle: A medieval hilltop fortress dating to the Moorish period, with extensive curtain walls and battlements overlooking the town of Sintra.
- Quinta da Regaleira: An early 20th-century estate with landscaped gardens, grottoes and an ornate initiation well, located near the center of Sintra and part of the mountain's cultural ensemble.

Tips for Visiting Sintra Mountains #
- Hike early: sunrise on the ridge often clears the fog that pools in the Sintra valleys, revealing Pena Palace perched like a painted theatre.
- Book tickets online for Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira in advance during summer; queues there can be 1-2 hours.
- Follow smaller paths away from the headliner palaces - the Serra hides Moorish ruins, forgotten manor houses, and belvederes with fewer people.

The Sintra hills are best experienced outside the July-August crush; shoulder seasons deliver the atmosphere that inspired 19th-century Romantics.
