Silvretta Alps
Mountains Alpine mountain range straddling Switzerland and Austria
Cross-border alpine massif between Switzerland and Austria, the Silvretta Alps attract mountaineers and skiers for glacier routes, high passes and long-distance trekking across rugged peaks.
The Silvretta Alps are a high mountain range on the Austria-Switzerland border characterized by peaks above 3,000 metres, glaciers and alpine passes. The range is a well-known area for alpine climbing, hiking and ski touring.
The terrain offers glacier routes and high-mountain ascents, with classic summits such as Piz Buin (about 3,312 metres) drawing mountaineers. Several high alpine roads and passes provide scenic access to valleys, reservoirs and trailheads used for summer hiking and winter ski touring. Mountain huts and marked routes support multi-day traverses through the massif.
The Silvretta has been used for alpine pasture, local transport across passes and as a mountaineering area since the 19th century; alpine infrastructure developed with roads and huts to support tourism and cross-border travel. Glacial retreat has altered some traditional routes in recent decades.
The range lies along the border between the Austrian state of Vorarlberg and the Swiss canton of Grisons (Graubünden), occupying high alpine terrain with road passes that connect the two countries.

- Plan visits from mid‑June to early September when high passes and alpine routes are usually snow-free and mountain huts are operating.
- Approach the Silvretta from either the Swiss Graubünden/Engadin side or the Austrian Paznaun/Ischgl side-both provide different trail networks and hut access for multi‑day traverses.
- Skip the main road viewpoints and tackle a hut‑to‑hut route or lesser‑used side valleys to reach glacial tarns and high ridgelines that many day visitors don't see.
