Silves Cathedral is the principal church in the town of Silves in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, originally constructed on the site of a former mosque after the Christian reconquest. The building retains a predominantly Gothic plan and stands on a hill above the town centre.
The cathedral’s compact interior and medieval fabric are the main attractions for visitors, together with its setting close to the town’s castle and archaeological remains. Visits are frequently combined with the castle and the historic streets of Silves.
The present church was established following the Christian recapture of the city and occupies a site that reflects Silves’ medieval importance as a fortified regional centre and former episcopal seat. Over subsequent centuries the building received alterations and repairs typical of a working parish church.
