How to Get to Silistra
Silistra sits on the Danube in northeastern Bulgaria near the Romanian border. It is best reached by regional coach from Varna, Ruse or Dobrich; the town has basic rail connections but buses are usually faster and more frequent.
Varna Airport (VAR): The nearest major international airport on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, about 120 km from Silistra. From Varna you can take a bus to Silistra (journey ≈2-2.5 hours) or combine rail and bus - direct coach services are the simplest option; prices are modest (regional coaches typically a few euros).
Sofia Airport (SOF): Bulgaria’s main international airport is much further (≈450 km). Travelers from Sofia usually take a long‑distance train or coach to Ruse or Dobrich and then a local connection to Silistra; this is a longer (≈5-7+ hours) and less convenient route than arriving via Varna or Bucharest (see below).
Train: Silistra has a railway station (Silistra station) with regional train services to Ruse and northeastern Bulgaria; services are infrequent and slower than coaches. Key route: Silistra-Ruse where connections to national rail network are available; expect several hours for onward travel.
Bus: Regular intercity buses connect Silistra with Ruse, Dobrich, Varna and other regional centres. Buses are usually faster and more frequent than trains for reaching major hubs; fares are low (typically a few euros) and travel times depend on destination - e.g., Silistra to Ruse ~1.5-2 hours by road.
How to Get Around Silistra #
Silistra’s historic centre is compact and easy to walk, with the riverfront and main sights reachable on foot. Local buses and taxis serve the town and connect to nearby villages; trains provide regional links but services are not very frequent. For border crossings and regional travel, plan ahead and check timetables; taxis are useful for short trips if bus times don’t match your plans.
