Sila National Park
National Park Calabrian national park of mountains, forests, and plateaus
Calabria’s upland reserve, Sila National Park offers forests, lakes and plateaus for hiking, winter sports and mushroom-hunting traditions in a less-traveled corner of southern Italy.
Sila National Park protects the high plateau and mountain landscape of the Sila plateau in Calabria, southern Italy, encompassing forests, lakes and mountain peaks. The reserve preserves both natural habitats and traditional rural land uses.
Visitors encounter dense beech and pine forests, upland pastures and several reservoirs used for recreation and water regulation. The park includes trails for hiking and areas used for winter sports when snow conditions permit, plus small mountain villages that serve as bases for exploration.
The Sila region has a long history of rural and pastoral activity; the national park designation was created to conserve its forested plateau, lakes and mountain ecosystems while supporting sustainable tourism. Modern infrastructure such as roads and reservoirs dates largely to the 20th century.
The park sits on the Sila plateau in inland Calabria, southern Italy, occupying upland terrain inland from the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts and accessible from regional towns in the province of Cosenza and neighbouring provinces.
- Forests and seasons: The park protects extensive beech and pine forests on a high plateau, with both summer hiking areas and winter snow conditions suitable for skiing in places.
What to See #
- Botte Donato: Botte Donato massif, the highest group of peaks within the Sila, reaching approximately 1,928 metres and forming the park's principal summit area.
- Lake systems: Several artificial lakes created in the 20th century, including Lake Cecita and Lake Arvo, which are used for recreation and water management.
Tips for Visiting Sila National Park #
- Aim for late spring through early autumn for hiking and early autumn for particularly good foliage colors; summer stays cooler up on the plateaus than the coast.
- Base yourself in Camigliatello Silano or Lorica to access trails and road links to the park's main plateaus and lakes without long drives on minor roads.
- Don't miss the park's glacial lakes (Cecita, Arvo, Ampollino) and the high plain landscapes-these quieter lake viewpoints and upland plateaus are more rewarding than the busiest village lookouts.
Best Time to Visit Sila National Park #
Late spring and early summer are ideal for enjoying Sila's mountain landscapes before the hottest months arrive.
