Castle Historic German castle and former Hohenzollern princely residence
Sigmaringen Castle crowns a bend of the Danube in Baden-Württemberg; open for tours, it displays period rooms and a museum about the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen line and offers riverside views.
Sigmaringen Castle (Schloss Sigmaringen) is a hilltop castle complex overlooking the town of Sigmaringen and the Danube in Baden-Württemberg. It has medieval origins and later developed into the seat and residence of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen princely line.
The complex combines fortified medieval elements with later residential and representational wings, arranged around courtyards and set on a prominent cliff above the river. It houses exhibition spaces and displays related to the princely family and regional history.
Notable episodes include its long association with the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen family; in late 1944 and early 1945 the site was used as a temporary seat for the short-lived Vichy government in exile. Over centuries the castle has been rebuilt and adapted to changing defensive and residential requirements.
The castle stands immediately above the town of Sigmaringen on the upper Danube in southwestern Germany, within the Swabian Jura foothills and accessible from regional roads and rail links.
