Sigatoka sand dunes
Area Coastal sand dunes and archaeological site
The Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park on Viti Levu preserves coastal dunes, archaeological sites and native flora; visitors hike shifting sand trails, view ancient pottery finds and picnic by the river mouth.
The Sigatoka Sand Dunes are a coastal dune system on the southwest coast of Viti Levu, Fiji, located near the town of Sigatoka. The area is recognised for its extensive sand dunes and for containing archaeological and ecological features of local importance.
Marked walking trails cross the dunes and allow visitors to explore the shifting sand formations and coastal vegetation. Walks offer views over the mouth of the Sigatoka River and the nearby coastline; the terrain is sandy and can be steep in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
The dune system was formed by long-term coastal sand accumulation and by sediment carried by the Sigatoka River. The area has been managed for conservation to protect both its geological features and identified archaeological remains.
The dunes sit on the southwest shore of Viti Levu in Fiji’s Western division, close to the town of Sigatoka and the river mouth of the Sigatoka River. The landscape around the site is coastal with a mix of beach, river delta and agricultural land inland.
