Sierra Nevada is a stratovolcano in Chile’s Araucanía Region, situated within the Andes volcanic zone. It is one of several volcanic cones in the region and forms part of the southern Andean volcanic belt.
As a stratovolcano it consists of layered lava flows and pyroclastic deposits; it is mapped and monitored as part of Chile’s network of Andean volcanoes. The volcano rises above the surrounding highland terrain of the Araucanía Region.
