Sierra Nevada National Park (Spain)

Sierra Nevada National Park in Andalusia protects a high mountain range in southern Spain and includes continental Spain’s highest peaks. The park encompasses alpine terrain, glacial cirques, high plateaus and river headwaters, and is noted for its biodiversity and seasonal snow cover.

A principal attraction is Mulhacén, the highest mountain in continental Spain at 3,479 metres, along with other high ridges and summits used for summer hiking and winter sports. The park combines wilderness hiking, botanical interest (high mountain endemics) and ski infrastructure higher on the slopes.

The area has been managed for conservation since the late 20th century, with protected status addressing both ecological values and recreational use. Seasonal conditions vary sharply by altitude, with snow and glacier remnants at the highest elevations and Mediterranean climate lower down.

Sierra Nevada sits in the provinces of Granada and Almería in Andalusia, roughly 30 kilometres southeast of the city of Granada; the park’s high zones are accessible from mountain roads and the Sierra Nevada ski station.
