Sierra Nevada de Mérida is a segment of the Venezuelan Andes located in Mérida state that includes the country’s highest mountain summits. The range contains alpine peaks, glacially carved valleys and high-elevation paramo vegetation.

Peaks reach the high 4,000-metre band, with Pico Bolívar rising to about 4,978 metres and forming the range’s highest point. The high zones are used for mountaineering, scientific study of high-elevation ecosystems and are drained by headwater streams important to regional water supplies.

The area is largely protected within national park boundaries, which aim to conserve glacial landforms, native paramo and montane forests. Mountain access is achieved from the city of Mérida and surrounding highland towns, with routes and technical climbs to major summits.

Geographically the Sierra Nevada de Mérida sits in western Venezuela as part of the northern Andes, occupying much of Mérida state and forming a high central spine in the region.
