Main image

The Sierra de Guadarrama is a mountain range of the Central System in central Spain, forming a natural barrier north of the Madrid basin and stretching along the border of the Community of Madrid and Castile and León. It includes high granite and gneiss massifs, deep valleys and glacial landforms.

The range is visited for hiking, climbing, skiing and nature observation, with notable areas such as the Peñalara massif and La Pedriza offering distinct terrain types from glacial cirques to extensive granite boulder fields. Trails, mountain passes and refuges provide access for day trips and multi‑day routes.

Protection and conservation are formalised through the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, established in 2013, which protects habitats, water sources and endemic flora and fauna. The mountains play an important role for regional recreation and as a green backdrop to the Madrid metropolitan area.

Geographically the range lies immediately north of Madrid, with principal access points at Puerto de Navacerrada, Puerto de Cotos and nearby towns; the highest summit in the range is Pico de Peñalara at 2,428 metres.

  • Highest peak and protection: Contains the highest peak of the Guadarrama range, Pico de Peñalara at 2,428 metres, and was designated part of a national park in 2013.
  • Recreation and access: Offers a network of marked trails, climbing and winter sports near mountain passes that are reachable from Madrid in about an hour to 90 minutes by car or public transport depending on traffic.
