Near Madrid the Sierra de Guadarrama range offers granite peaks, pine forests and winter ski resorts inside a national park. Hikers, climbers and skiers use marked trails, mountain huts and small highland villages.
The Sierra de Guadarrama is a mountain range of the Central System in central Spain, forming a natural barrier north of the Madrid basin and stretching along the border of the Community of Madrid and Castile and León. It includes high granite and gneiss massifs, deep valleys and glacial landforms.
The range is visited for hiking, climbing, skiing and nature observation, with notable areas such as the Peñalara massif and La Pedriza offering distinct terrain types from glacial cirques to extensive granite boulder fields. Trails, mountain passes and refuges provide access for day trips and multi‑day routes.
Protection and conservation are formalised through the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, established in 2013, which protects habitats, water sources and endemic flora and fauna. The mountains play an important role for regional recreation and as a green backdrop to the Madrid metropolitan area.
Geographically the range lies immediately north of Madrid, with principal access points at Puerto de Navacerrada, Puerto de Cotos and nearby towns; the highest summit in the range is Pico de Peñalara at 2,428 metres.

How to Get to Sierra de Guadarrama #
From Madrid take the A-6 or M-601 northwest toward Cercedilla and Navacerrada. Cercedilla is a common rail gateway with C-8 and C-10 commuter trains from Madrid; local buses and taxis connect to trailheads.
Tips for Visiting Sierra de Guadarrama #
- If planning to hike the higher ridges, check for National Park restrictions and mountain weather forecasts-late afternoon storms can develop quickly.
- For scenic drives use the M-601 and A-6 approaches from Madrid; stop at Miradores (viewpoints) for better photographs than the main car parks.
