Sierra de Gredos
Mountains Mountain range in central Spain with alpine landscapes
A granite massif in central Spain featuring glacial cirques and alpine lakes such as Laguna Grande; hikers and climbers use marked trails and seasonal mountain refuges to access classic routes.
The Sierra de Gredos is a mountain range in central Spain forming the western sector of the Sistema Central, with rugged granite peaks and glacial cirques. It is a major highland area spanning parts of the provinces in Castilla y León and neighbouring regions.
The range’s highest summit is Pico Almanzor at 2,592 metres, and the landscape includes characteristic glacial features such as the Circo de Gredos and the Lago/ Laguna Grande de Gredos. The area supports alpine grasslands, granite cliffs and populations of Spanish ibex and other mountain wildlife.
Historically the range has been used for pastoralism and seasonal grazing, and in the 20th century parts of it were set aside for conservation and recreation as regional parks. The Gredos area is popular for hiking, mountaineering and nature observation, with established refuges and marked trails.
Geographically the Sierra de Gredos lies roughly west-northwest of Madrid, forming a natural barrier across central Iberia; common access points include mountain villages such as Navarredonda de Gredos and trailheads at Plataforma de Gredos.
- Highest point: Pico Almanzor reaches 2,592 metres and is a central objective for climbers and experienced hikers visiting the range.
- Access points: The Plataforma de Gredos and nearby mountain villages such as Navarredonda de Gredos are common trailheads for hikes into the high peaks and cirques.

Sierra de Gredos is reached by car from central Spain; the range is commonly accessed from Ávila province or from the south-west approaches near Ávila and Arenas de San Pedro. From Madrid it is typically a drive of a couple of hours (routes via the A‑6/roads toward Ávila and local roads toward Hoyos del Espino/La Plataforma de Gredos). There are parking areas at main trailheads and short to moderate walks from those car parks to trails and viewpoints.
Tips for Visiting Sierra de Gredos #
- Use Hoyos del Espino or the La Plataforma trailhead as your starting point for the classic route to Laguna Grande de Gredos - it's the most developed and signposted access for that popular hike.
- Start very early in high season to beat the peak-day crowds at Laguna Grande and secure parking at La Plataforma, or choose weekday mornings when fewer visitors are on the trails.
- Walk beyond the main viewpoints if you want more solitude and a better chance to see wildlife such as the Gredos ibex-many day visitors turn back at the lake while quieter ridgelines continue onward.
