Sierra de Ayllón

Sierra de Ayllón is a mountain range in central Spain located mainly in the provinces of Guadalajara and Segovia, known for its wooded slopes and rural landscapes. It forms part of the upland terrain north of the central Spanish plateau and contains recognised natural areas within its forests.

The range offers hiking and country walks on marked trails and forest tracks, with notable stands of beech in protected areas such as the Hayedo de Tejera Negra. Trails are typically short to medium in length and connect traditional villages and pastureland rather than long alpine ridges.

Historically the area has supported small rural communities, forestry and summer grazing; many of the villages and paths reflect longstanding local land use rather than large-scale development. Conservation measures in parts of the range protect remnant native woodlands and their associated flora and fauna.

Geographically the range sits in central Spain’s uplands between the provinces of Guadalajara and Segovia, forming part of the transition between plateau and higher central mountains. The landscape is a mix of wooded slopes, limestone outcrops and cultivated valleys.
