Sierra Carapé is a low mountain ridge in southeastern Uruguay that forms part of the larger Cuchilla Grande upland system. It contains Uruguay’s highest ground and is the country’s most prominent elevated landscape.
The defining feature is the summit Cerro Catedral, which reaches roughly 513 metres and is the highest point in Uruguay. The ridge is characterised by rounded hills, grassland and rocky outcrops rather than steep alpine terrain.
Historically the area has been used for grazing and rural settlement rather than extractive industry, and it has not undergone major industrial development. The terrain is visited for short hikes, viewpoints and local outdoor recreation.
Geographically Sierra Carapé lies in southeastern Uruguay and forms part of the interior uplands that run through the country’s eastern departments.
