Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena) is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Siena, Tuscany, and an important example of Italian Gothic architecture dating principally to the 12th through 14th centuries. It is distinguished by its black-and-white marble striping and an extensive programme of interior decoration.
The nave and chapels display inlaid marble floors, sculpted tombs and paintings that attract art and architecture visitors; the elaborate marble pavement panels were executed over several centuries and are revealed seasonally. The Piccolomini Library within the complex contains an extensive fresco cycle by Pinturicchio and illuminated choir books of particular artistic importance.
A short additional paragraph covering scale and notable works
The attached Museo dell’Opera preserves major works originally made for the cathedral, including the panels from Duccio di Buoninsegna’s Maestà. The complex also includes the baptistery, the unfinished extension known as the Facciatone and views over the city from elevated terraces.
Construction of the cathedral complex began in the medieval period with major building phases in the 13th and 14th centuries. Ambitious plans for a large extension (the “Duomo Nuovo”) were started in the 14th century but were halted after the Black Death; subsequent centuries saw additions, decoration campaigns and the relocation of key works into the cathedral museum.
The cathedral sits in central Siena at the Piazza del Duomo in Tuscany, within the historic city core a short walk from the Piazza del Campo. Siena lies in central Italy and is one of Tuscany’s principal medieval cities.
- Marble floor: The cathedral's marble floor is an inlaid programme of panels created across the 14th to 17th centuries and is revealed seasonally, typically from late spring through autumn.
- Piccolomini frescoes: The Piccolomini Library contains a near-complete cycle of frescoes painted by Pinturicchio and his workshop in the early 1500s illustrating the life of Enea Silvio Piccolomini (Pope Pius II).
