How to Get to Shumen

Shumen is most conveniently reached from Varna Airport (VAR) or by rail at Shumen railway station. Regular intercity buses and BDZ trains link Shumen with Varna, Burgas and Sofia; Varna is the closest airport and usual gateway for air travellers.

By Air

Varna Airport (VAR): Varna is the closest airport to Shumen (about 70 km). From the airport take bus 409 into Varna centre (≈1.60 BGN, ~20-30 min) or a taxi (≈15-25 BGN to the city). From Varna’s central bus station or rail station you can catch frequent buses or BDZ regional trains to Shumen (see Train & Bus card) - the onward journey is roughly 1-1.5 hours and fares typically fall in the ~6-8 BGN (bus) or ~5-8 BGN (train) range.

Burgas Airport (BOJ): Burgas is farther south (roughly 130-150 km) but can be useful for some domestic and seasonal international flights. From the airport you reach Burgas central bus station by local shuttle or taxi; direct buses to Shumen run several times per day (journey about 2-2.5 hours). Expect intercity bus fares in the ~10-15 BGN range.

Sofia Airport (SOF): Sofia is the national hub and an option if you can’t fly into Varna; it is a long overland trip to Shumen. Trains or long-distance buses from Sofia to Shumen take about 4-5 hours, with fares commonly in the ~20-30 BGN range.
