Main image

Sherkin Island is an inhabited island off the coast of County Cork, Ireland, in Roaringwater Bay and close to the village of Baltimore on the mainland. It has a small permanent population and is a common short-day or multi-day visit from the Cork coast during the summer months.

Attractions include coastal walking, seabird colonies, a small heritage centre, the ruins of a medieval coastal castle and an on-island lighthouse. The island offers sandy and rocky shores and local craft and community events rather than large-scale tourism facilities.

Historically the island was the base for local seafaring families and contains archaeological and built remains from medieval and later periods. Modern visitation is driven by its shoreline scenery, birdlife and cultural heritage.

Sherkin Island sits off the west Cork coast near the harbour village of Baltimore and is reached by short ferry crossings from the mainland; the island’s small roads and paths connect the village, castle ruins and shoreline viewpoints.

  • Ferry access: Regular passenger ferry services operate from Baltimore on the mainland, making the island a short day-trip from the west Cork coast in summer.
  • Visitor services: Small population and limited services mean visitors should bring supplies; there are seasonal cafes, a heritage centre and basic visitor facilities on the island.

What to See #

  • Sherkin Castle: Ruins of a medieval coastal castle associated with the historic O'Driscoll seafaring clan; the remains occupy a short walk from the village.
  • Sherkin Island Lighthouse: 19th century lighthouse located on the island, serving as a navigational aid for vessels in Roaringwater Bay and visible from the island's shoreline.
