Sharr Mountains National Park

Sharr Mountains National Park covers part of the Šar/Shar mountain massif in southern Kosovo, a region of high peaks, alpine pastures and woodland. The area is an important local centre for outdoor recreation and biodiversity.

The park contains trails, glacial lakes and mountain pastures used for hiking and summer grazing, and in winter parts of the massif support ski facilities and winter sports. The Brezovica zone is the best known developed resort area on the Kosovo side and provides access into higher alpine terrain. Wildlife, seasonal pastures and traditional mountain villages are further attractions for visitors exploring the range.

The mountains have been used for pastoralism, seasonal settlement and strategic movement for centuries; modern conservation efforts have focused on protecting habitats and supporting sustainable tourism. Administrative protection and park management aim to coordinate recreation and biodiversity conservation.

The park lies in southern Kosovo near the border with North Macedonia and Albania, occupying highland terrain in the District of Ferizaj and within reach of regional towns such as Prizren and Ferizaj.

• Transboundary range: The Sharr range spans multiple countries and contains alpine terrain, glacial lakes and mixed forests, making it a biodiversity hotspot in the southern Balkans.

What to See #

• Brezovica: Brezovica area, a principal ski and recreation zone on the Kosovo side of the range with lifts and winter tourism infrastructure.
• Alpine pastures and lakes: Numerous high mountain pastures and glacial lakes scattered through the massif that are used for summer grazing and trekking routes.
