Sforza Castle
Castle Renaissance fortress housing museums in central Milan
Milan’s Castello Sforzesco houses municipal museums and art collections within Renaissance walls; tourists visit for Michelangelo’s Rondanini Pietà, fortress courtyards and nearby Parco Sempione.
Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco) is a large Renaissance-era fortress in central Milan, rebuilt and expanded by the Sforza dynasty in the mid 15th century. It functions today as a major civic complex housing several museums and important artworks.
The complex includes broad courtyards, fortified walls and towers, and multiple museum spaces holding collections of sculpture, applied arts and antiquities; one notable exhibit is Michelangelo’s late Rondanini Pietà. Visitors commonly explore the Cortile delle Armi, climb the Filarete Tower for views and visit the castle’s museum galleries and temporary exhibitions.
The site began as a Visconti fortification and was largely rebuilt by Francesco Sforza after 1450, with later Renaissance alterations under Ludovico il Moro. The castle saw military use, partial decline, and extensive restoration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that established the present appearance and museum layout.
Located immediately northwest of Milan’s main commercial centre and adjacent to Parco Sempione, the castle is within easy walking distance of the Duomo and the city’s principal cultural attractions.
- Visitor access: Many interior spaces are museums with separate admission; the outer courtyards and ramparts are freely accessible and provide clear views over central Milan.
- Good viewing point: Best light for photography is late afternoon on the castle's western facades and from the Filarete Tower for city panoramas over Parco Sempione.
What to See #
- Courtyard and central keep: The castle's central complex built and expanded under the Sforza dukes in the 15th and 16th centuries, surrounding the large inner courtyard known as the Cortile delle Armi.
- Filarete Tower: The Filarete Tower reconstructed during late 19th- and early 20th-century restorations and forming the main entrance tower on the south side.
- Civic museums and art collections: A group of civic museums housed inside the castle, including collections of arms and armour, applied arts, and an art gallery containing late works such as Michelangelo's Rondanini Pietà.
- Parco Sempione approaches: Park access and approaches that link the castle to Parco Sempione and the Arco della Pace immediately to the west of the fortress.
