Seymour Island

Seymour Island lies off the northeastern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and is noted for its exposed sedimentary sequences that preserve abundant Paleogene fossils. The island has long been important to paleontologists studying Eocene and Oligocene marine and terrestrial faunas.

The island also hosts an Argentine research facility, Marambio Station, which includes an airstrip that supports seasonal logistics and scientific operations. The shallow coastal shelves and rocky outcrops expose layers rich in fossils used to reconstruct ancient Antarctic environments.

Seymour Island is part of the James Ross Island group in the Weddell Sea region and is visited mainly by scientific teams; tourism and independent visits are rare and subject to national Antarctic Treaty regulations.
