Seven Rila Lakes
Lakes Group of glacial lakes in Rila Mountains, scenic
Cluster of glacial lakes high in Bulgaria’s Rila Mountains accessed by trails and a mountain lift; hikers come for alpine scenery, rocky cirques and straightforward day treks between sapphire-colored lakes.
The Seven Rila Lakes are a cluster of seven glacial lakes in Bulgaria’s Rila Mountains, noted for clear alpine water, cirque topography and scenic hiking. The group is one of Bulgaria’s most visited natural attractions and sits in a compact chain that is easy to traverse on foot.
Key sights are the seven named lakes that lie one after another along the slope, with the deepest lake - Okoto (The Eye) - reaching about 37.5 metres. The lakes’ setting includes high-mountain meadows, rocky cirques and short connecting trails that provide multiple viewpoints and photo opportunities.
The lakes were formed by glacial action during the Pleistocene and have since been part of local mountain use for grazing and seasonal travel; they are now protected within the Rila mountain reserve network. Seasonal visitor facilities and marked trails have been developed to manage recreational use.
Geographically the Seven Rila Lakes occupy a high-altitude area of the Rila range in southwestern Bulgaria, within Rila National Park. The site is commonly reached from the Panichishte resort area or from trails that descend toward the Rila foothills; Sofia lies to the north and is the nearest major city gateway.
- Access and hiking: The lakes are seven glacially formed tarns ranged along a north-south axis and typically visited by a marked trail; access is commonly by cable car to Panichishte followed by a hike of 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on pace.
What to See #
- Okoto (The Eye): Okoto (The Eye) - the deepest of the group at roughly 37.5 metres and set in a steep cirque near the top cluster of lakes.
- Bliznaka (The Twin): Bliznaka (The Twin) - the largest lake by surface area, forming the central section of the chain and often the most photogenic in calm weather.
- Salzata (The Tear): Salzata (The Tear) - the uppermost lake, located at the highest end of the hiking route and often visited first from the Panichishte side.
How to Get to Seven Rila Lakes #
The Seven Rila Lakes are reached from the Rila foothills base at Panichishte (near Sapareva Banya). Most visitors drive from Sofia (approximately a two‑hour drive) to the Panichishte car park and then take the Panichishte chairlift/gondola up toward the lake area; from the top lift station you follow marked trails and expect a further uphill walk/hike (commonly 30-90 minutes depending on pace and which lakes you visit). Seasonal road and lift closures can affect access, so check local information before travelling.
Tips for Visiting Seven Rila Lakes #
- Catch the first cable car from Panichishte (or start very early on foot) so you can hike the trail while it's cool and before the lift and bus crowds arrive; afternoon storms are common in summer.
- Start high and hike downwards if possible - taking the lift up and walking down reduces the steep ascent and gives better photo opportunities at each lake viewpoint.
- Don't stop at the most photographed lakes; continue up to the ridge viewpoints for sweeping panoramas of all seven lakes in a single view that many day visitors miss.
- Check the seasonal lift schedule and bring layers: the plateau can be much colder than towns below and lifts sometimes close early in bad weather.
Best Time to Visit Seven Rila Lakes #
Best visited in summer (June-September) when trails and access are reliable and the lakes are free of snow.
