The Serranía de Macuira is an isolated mountain massif in the La Guajira peninsula of northern Colombia, rising abruptly from dry coastal plains and desert. It is protected within the Macuira National Natural Park and supports humid forest communities uncommon in the surrounding arid region.
Trails through the massif lead to viewpoints, streams and small waterfalls and pass through cloud forest and dry forest transitions. The area is important for endemic species and for migratory and resident birds, and it offers stark contrast to the nearby lowland desert landscapes.
Local Wayuu communities have long inhabited the wider La Guajira region and the massif has cultural as well as ecological significance. The protected status of the massif reflects its value as a biological enclave and a water supply source for the area.
The Serranía de Macuira is located on the Guajira peninsula in northern Colombia, rising from the Caribbean coastal plain within La Guajira Department and visible as a green island of higher ground in the otherwise arid landscape.
