Serra dos Ancares
Mountains Rugged Galician mountains with traditional villages and biodiversity
Bordering Galicia and León, Serra dos Ancares holds steep slopes, chestnut forests and stone villages; visitors hike mountain tracks, sample local cider and study traditional thatched houses.
Serra dos Ancares is a mountain range in northwestern Spain, lying in the Ancares massif of Galicia. It is notable for its remote highland villages and well-preserved traditional architecture.
The area is primarily visited for walking and rural tourism, with networked trails across ridges, beech and oak woodlands and open mountain pastures. Small villages such as Piornedo retain traditional stone-and-thatch houses and an ethnographic museum that documents local mountain life.
The range has been shaped by centuries of pastoralism and small-scale agriculture; villages developed as isolated upland communities with local building traditions. Administrative boundaries place parts of the massif on both Galician and Castile-and-Leon sides, with land use continuity between provinces.
The Serra dos Ancares sits in the province of Lugo in Galicia near the border with León, in northwest Spain. The landscape is remote and mountainous, accessed from small towns in Galicia and neighboring Castilla y León.
- Local character: The Galician name distinguishes this sector of the larger Ancares massif and is known for well-preserved traditional mountain villages and vernacular architecture.
What to See #
- Piornedo (pallozas): Traditional stone-and-thatch dwellings and an ethnographic museum preserving local highland architecture and livestock-keeping practices, located in the village of Piornedo on the Galician side of the range.
- Highland pastures and forests: Rugged ridgelines, beech and oak woodlands and high pastures that form the core zones used for transhumant grazing and hill walking across the massif.
How to Get to Serra dos Ancares #
Serra dos Ancares is a dispersed mountain area on the Galicia-León border; the easiest way in is by car. Typical access is from Galician villages such as A Fonsagrada or Becerreá via local mountain roads from the nearest provincial centres (Lugo and Ponferrada). Driving from Lugo or Ponferrada typically takes around 1-1.5 hours depending on the exact trailhead and road used.
Park at one of the small village trailheads (A Fonsagrada, Becerreá or nearby hamlets) and follow marked walking paths into the higher ridges; walking distances from parking to main viewpoints and huts vary from short 1-3 km approaches to longer day walks.
Tips for Visiting Serra dos Ancares #
- Best time of day: aim for early morning or late afternoon for clearer light, cooler temperatures and far fewer people on the trails than at midday.
- Use the small mountain villages such as Piornedo as a base/starting point - they give direct access to traditional pallozas and the most accessible footpaths into the Ancares massif.
- What most visitors miss: take one of the lesser-used shepherd trails above the hamlets to find intact high-pasture landscapes and panoramic ridgeline views rather than sticking to the main valley tracks.
Best Time to Visit Serra dos Ancares #
Best visited late spring through early autumn (roughly June-September) for the most reliable conditions for hiking and access.
