Serra del Cadí
Mountains Pre-Pyrenean massif with cliffs, hiking trails, wildlife
The Serra del Cadí forms high limestone ridges in Catalonia’s Pyrenees, part of Cadí-Moixeró park; hikers and climbers use its trails and refuges, and locals ski or visit nearby mountain villages.
Serra del Cadí is a limestone mountain range in Catalonia, northeastern Spain, forming a prominent ridge within the Pre-Pyrenees and characterising the local landscape with steep cliffs and high pastures. It is a major component of the protected Cadí-Moixeró natural area.
Key features include a long escarpment and a series of peaks and passes that are widely used for hiking, climbing and mountain recreation. The range is notable for its geology and for the clear visual separation it provides between adjacent basins and valleys.
The Cadí massif and its neighbouring Moixeró sector have been managed for conservation and outdoor recreation, with trails and mountain routes established to provide access while protecting habitats.
Serra del Cadí sits in the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees in northeastern Spain and overlooks the Cerdanya basin to the north and lower lands to the south; it is accessible from nearby Catalan towns and regional road networks.
- Protected natural area: Part of the larger Cadí-Moixeró protected area, which conserves distinctive limestone ridges, high mountain pastures and steep cliffs used for hiking and climbing.
- Geographic barrier: The range forms a clear geological and visual barrier between the Cerdanya basin to the north and lower Catalan plains to the south, making passes and viewpoints regionally important.
What to See #
- Cadí ridge: Cadí ridge - a long limestone escarpment that forms the main profile of the range and presents steep cliffs and high peaks along its crest.
- Moixeró sector: Moixeró sector - adjoining limestone massifs and lower slopes that form the western extension of the protected area and connect to the Pre-Pyrenees landscape.
How to Get to Serra del Cadí #
The Serra del Cadí massif is accessed from the C-16 corridor in Catalonia; the usual approach by car from Barcelona is to take the C-16 toward Manresa and continue to the Berga/Bagà area (about 1.5-2 hours by car, roughly 100-120 km depending on route). From Berga or Bagà follow local mountain roads and trailhead car parks that serve Cadí‑Moixeró Natural Park; trailheads and parking areas put you within short to moderate walks into the range (walk times vary by trail).
Tips for Visiting Serra del Cadí #
- Visit the Cadí‑Moixeró area outside of mid‑day on popular weekends - early starts at trailheads like Gósol/Saldes or Bagà will avoid the busiest periods on routes toward Pedraforca and the main ridges.
- Use Bagà, Gósol or Tuixent as bases for different sectors of the park: these towns provide the easiest access to trailheads and local information for the Cadí and Pedraforca sectors respectively.
- If driving, use the C‑16/Túnel del Cadí corridor as your main approach to the park from Barcelona or the coast, then follow local roads to trailheads - mountain weather can change quickly, so check conditions and refuge opening times before you set out.
Best Time to Visit Serra del Cadí #
