Serra de Monchique is a compact mountain range in the western Algarve, in Portugal’s Faro district, noted for its wooded hills and cooler, wetter microclimate compared with the coastal plain. The range contains the Algarve’s highest point and a number of small towns and spas set into its slopes.
Hillsides are covered by mixed woodland, with belts of eucalyptus, cork oak and other Mediterranean vegetation; the area is used for local agriculture and tourism. The highest hill, Fóia, reaches about 902 metres and is a frequent destination for visitors seeking panoramic views and short walks.
The massif is an ancient geological feature of the Algarve with long-standing human settlement, local forestry and small-scale agriculture shaping the landscape. Local spa settlements and villages developed around mountain springs and the range has served as a regional resource for timber and water.
The Serra de Monchique sits inland from the western Algarve coast, above towns such as Monchique and a short drive from coastal centres like Portimão. The range rises steeply from the coastal plain and is a noticeable inland landmark in Faro district.
