Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal, dominated by granite peaks and a central plateau. Its summit area includes Torre, which reaches about 1,993 meters and is the highest point on continental Portugal.
The range contains glacial landforms and highland lakes, and supports a range of outdoor activities from winter skiing on a small resort near Torre to summer hiking on marked trails. The landscape includes schist villages and pastures adapted to the mountain environment.
Geologically Serra da Estrela was shaped by past glaciation and displays cirques, moraines and glacial lakes. The area is also the source of rivers that flow out into lower plains and has a distinct mountain ecology.
The massif sits in central Portugal within Guarda District and forms part of a protected natural park that covers the higher elevations and surrounding valleys.
